Families of over 60 million children are already receiving the Child Tax Credit – $3,600 annually for children under 6 and $3,000 for kids between 6 and 17 – but families who haven’t signed up and earn too little to have to file taxes are missing out. These families must sign up by November 15, to get payments this year.

Between now and November 15, families can go to GetCTC.org, an easy to use tool to sign-up for the Child Tax Credit for families who aren’t required to file taxes. This tool, created by Code for America, in collaboration with the White House and Treasury, is in English and Spanish and is mobile friendly, and most families can complete it within about 15 minutes. But families need to know about the tool if they’re going to use it.

That’s why, we’re asking everyone to go all-out in their efforts to inform non-filers over these critical next two weeks. Successful enrollment efforts often require a good “first-mile” and “last-mile” strategy. For some families, getting to the non-filer tool at GetCTC.gov may be all they need to sign up; for others, in-person assistance can be critical.

Text Messaging campaigns, particularly when paired with in-person sign-up assistance through navigators and counselors, have been shown to be very effective. In Massachusetts, Michigan and California, the state Departments of Social Services texted beneficiaries of SNAP and other assistance programs, encouraging them to sign up at GetCTC.org. These messages from trusted messengers increased CTC enrollment in those states.
