Please read this message as it contains important information regarding required Wellness training going into effect February 2025.
Per Child Care Licensing regulations, two hours of Wellness training must be completed within the first 90 days of employment and each year thereafter. Approved courses must cover information related to NUTRITION, OBESITY PREVENTION and PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.
To provide pathways for increased knowledge in these areas, and with support from Child Care Licensing, the Nevada Early Childhood Obesity Prevention Workgroup (ECOP), in partnership with The Nevada Registry, has created content guidelines, course objectives and trainer qualifications for Wellness courses. As of February 2025, ALL Wellness courses must contain age and developmental levels as well as varying levels of knowledge (basic, intermediate and advanced) and must contain at least two hours of content to meet the new requirement, regardless of the level of training. The purpose of providing varying levels of training is to provide more options to seasoned staff who have taken Wellness training for many years and to encourage ECE educators to increase caregiver knowledge in these areas over time rather than continuing to complete the same training year after year.
What this means is that Wellness training courses you have taken in the past may not meet the new requirement. For this reason, it is imperative to only select Wellness courses from The Nevada Registry’s Training Calendar. This is the best way to ensure the training you complete will be accepted to meet the licensing requirement.
We recognize this is a lot of new information. Please review the following to better understand the changes.
Previously/Through January 2025:
Educators have the option to take either two (2), one-hour training sessions or one (1) two-hour training session to meet the Wellness requirement. Training sessions meeting the training requirement are flagged on the Training Calendar with the statements below:
- This training can be taken to meet the Child Nutrition/Wellness training requirement. Wellness training must be completed annually.
- This training can be applied toward the Child Nutrition/Wellness training requirement. However, because it is less than two hours in length, additional training in Wellness will need to be completed to fully satisfy the two-hour requirement. Wellness training must be completed annually.
Beginning in February 2025:
Educators must take a two-hour training session to meet the Wellness requirement (one hour sessions are no longer available/approved). Training sessions meeting the NEW training requirements will be flagged on the Training Calendar with the statements below:
- This is a Basic level Wellness training aligned with the Nevada Early Childhood Obesity Prevention (ECOP) Workgroup guidelines effective February 1, 2025, and fully satisfies the annual Lifelong Wellness training requirement of Child Care Licensing.
- This is an Intermediate level Wellness training aligned with the Nevada Early Childhood Obesity Prevention (ECOP) Workgroup guidelines effective February 1, 2025, and fully satisfies the annual Lifelong Wellness training requirement of Child Care Licensing.
- This is an Advanced level Wellness training aligned with the Nevada Early Childhood Obesity Prevention (ECOP) Workgroup guidelines effective February 1, 2025, and fully satisfies the annual Lifelong Wellness training requirement of Child Care Licensing.
If you are seeking Wellness training prior to February 1, 2025, you will notice both options are available (one and two hour training sessions) but as of February 1, 2025, only two-hour options will be available. As a reminder, beginning with a ‘basic’ level course and increasing to ‘intermediate’ and ‘advanced’ in subsequent years provides opportunities to increase your knowledge and continually improve your practice in these areas.
Make the most of your professional development!
All new Wellness courses scheduled after February 1, 2025 (or approved after this date) will be reviewed to ensure they meet the new guidelines and will be assigned a course level and new approval code which means that online courses completed previously, and repeated, will not be added to your account/will not be included on your Professional Development Profile/Transcript or counted toward your completed training hours. Make your investment of time and money count by only selecting Wellness training and courses from The Nevada Registry’s Training Calendar, regardless of where you accessed this professional development in the past.
